Stage 3

Km 0 by Zarautz

To get to Getaria there are a couple of possibilities:

  1. We can take alongside the church of Santa Maria the road that goes to Meagas and take a hundred meters after the way to the ermita of Santa Barbara. This is an ancient calzada that runs in strong repecho between txakolí vineyards to the vicinity of the temple, consecrated in 1709 thanks to the contributions of the countryside. From the ermita you get a privileged panoramic view of Zarautz and its extensive beach. Then the official road continues by a road to give with the GI-3391 road that we take down for a hundred meters then turn to the left, eye, if you want to visit Getaria at this point continue straight by the 400 meters road to the town. The official path continues on the aforementioned crosses to the left to Askizu.
  2. The second option circulates by the peasant riding to the sea that goes parallel to the N-634, a tour that took 8 years to build. Let’s see the mountain San Antón, popularly known as the ‘raton’, and at the entrance of Getaria, cottage of Juan Sebastián Elcano, we can leave a few moments the Way and visit the magnificent port of this marine villa, to which it is accessed under the passage of the church of San Salvador.

km 4.1 of Ghetto

The calzada progresses to the San Prudencio neighborhood, where the Kanpaia hostel is located, and takes afterwards to the GI-3392 road.On 550 meters later we leave the asphalt on the left towards the Aziategi house, between vineyards and maizals. A final repecho places us next to the church of San Martín de Tours, in the guetarense neighborhood of Askizu. next to parish there is a fountain where we can take a rest. Also, a few meters, the Agote Aundi hostel is located.

6.1 km from Askizu

The itinerary leaves Askizu and advances with immeasurable views of the Cantábrico and Zumaia. We descend to the guipuzcoan villa by the mountain ladder to the N-634. next to the road, right hand, is the House Museum of the painter Ignacio Zuloaga and, attached to it, the ermita of Santiago, of the 15th century. Finally, we get to Zumaia crossing the Urola river and down the stairs to cross the Angeles Sorazu walk.

Km 9.1 by Zumaia

We wake up the villa riding up to the San José de las Carmelitas Descalzas convent, which works as a municipal hostel in July and August, and by the Arritokieta ermita. Returning the view is obtained a good final panoramic view of Zumaia and the Urola desembocadura. The rural road runs down on a path that leads to the rest area of Elorriaga (Km 12,4) , with a fountain and several tables. The Elorriaga debarés neighborhood can be reached both by the left, by track, as well as by the right, by way.

km 13 – Elorriaga

In Elorriaga we follow the itinerary of the Camino de Santiago because there is also the of the GR-121, which goes more stick to the coast. The Camino falls to the National and the cross to rise by a brutal rampa that interna us on a wooden road. This tram 'rompepiernas' runs several portillos and falls again to the N-634, at the height of the Mardari neighborhood with bar-restaurant at the foot of the road. We passed over the A-8 (Km 16,3) and followed with caution by the National. We left it shortly by the right and advanced by a path that stretches a large road track, and that rises again to the N-634 with a last hard repecho. We finally reach Itziar, where well we deserve another rest. The sanctuary of Santa Maria of Itzial has been a high obliged on the Northern Way. The building is from the 16th century and is raised on a Romanic temple. In its interior, presiding the altar, there is the size of the Virgin of Itziar, a venerated image of the 13th centuries. The hymn to the Virgin says so: "Ave, of Itsiar the Virgin Beauty - Ave, the beloved Mother of the sea star."

Km 18.5 by Itziar

A track, which unfortunately hides the old hill, rises the last meters to the cemetery and falls down to Deba, which presents a strong level in the last plot. next to the track is the ermita of San Roque, which we can see in a colorful oven decorated with flowers and a pair of vieiras (Km 21) . Nothing more to enter the population we pass alongside the IES Mendata and continue through the Mogel Street to pick up the elevator. The new hostel inaugurated in June 2014 is located in the train station building, at the foot of the ría. Before going you have to pass through the Tourism Office to seal and register (Telephone 943 19 24 52). If it is closed, it can be done in the dependencies of the Municipal Police, which are located under the supports of the square.
